South Philadelphia Turf Club has not exactly lived up to the lofty expectations of its location. That is not so much the fault of the OTB, though it is relatively run-down compared to the sparkling new casino sportsbooks. The Oaks is in the Philadelphia suburbs, near Valley Forge. It has a modest retail sportsbook.

Legalized sports betting in Pennsylvania has generated its share of buzz. The ball started bouncing in Pennsylvania’s favor in May 2018 when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) was unconstitutional.
Pennsylvania casinos now have the option of applying for a license to add online and retail sports betting. Nine Philadelphia-area casino operators already paid the required $10 million licensing fee.

The casino’s parent company, Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment Inc., filed a petition last Friday with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to renovate the Valley Forge Turf Club at 600 Cresson Ave. as a satellite sports-betting location.

The facility, which opened as a horse-betting and simulcast facility in 1996, is just off busy U.S. 422, across from the Marketplace at Oaks.

The company’s application described the site as an “ideally suited” to sports betters and travelers because it is located near the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Valley Forge National Park, the King of Prussia Mall, and key suburbs, including the Philadelphia region’s Main Line. The site also has a sports bar.
